Every meaningful transformation in your life is hiding behind something that terrifies you. Every breakthrough you need is camouflaged as something you’d rather avoid. Every version of yourself you want to become is waiting on the other side of what scares you most.

Fear isn’t the problem. Fear avoidance is the problem.

Society taught you that courage means feeling no fear. That’s not courage. That’s numbness. Real courage is feeling the terror and moving toward it anyway.

I was petrified of spiders for 35 years. Full-blown, run-from-the-room, shout-my-wife-to-remove-it terror. An eight-legged creature the size of a 50p coin could control my state. Then I learned the fear pyramid: start small, build systematically, change your relationship with fear itself. Six months later, I could remove a spider without breaking a sweat.

That lesson unlocked everything else. Sobriety. Ultramarathons. Business. Writing. Each transformation was hiding behind a fear I’d been avoiding for years.

Now I’m chasing something that terrifies me again. The Welsh national backyard ultra record. 41+ hours of continuous running. 170+ miles. My current best is 25 hours. The gap between where I am and where I’m aiming makes my stomach drop.

That feeling isn’t a warning. It’s confirmation I’m pointed in the right direction.
